Intranet? What's that? What? Like the internet, but not? Smaller? Right. Here's the thing: intranet is like internet but confined to one network, say for example in an office environment. If the company had many offices they could all see the intranet, but nobody outside the network (i.e. the big bad world wide web) could see.

So, what's the point of an intranet? A Few things really. Quite often companies and organizations publish and manage all sorts of information that only really pertains to their staff. It would serve no real purpose in the world of the general internet and just clog things up. For example: memo to all staff re closure of toilets etc. You get the picture...

There are other more serious reasons too. Quite often an intranet will encompass operations like payroll or sensitive client information or perhaps the company's billion dollar super secret recipe... For all these reasons and more a company will require an intranet and a super secure one at that.

Intranets are popular because they work in exactly the same way as the internet and offer all the ease of use we love from the www.
